krysta rodriguez//first date//nov 2013
It was a rainy Tuesday night on Broadway but the stars of First Date still met with the fans at stagedoor. Krysta Rodriguez is amazing. I just basically screamed “Ahh…Krysta, you’re amazing!” when she came to me. I loved First Date. Why didn’t I see it early enough? It’s closing Jan 5. Get to it, folks!
zachary levi//first date//nov 2013
This production really is a big surprise to me. I had no idea how much of a delight this show was. Zachary Levi is a revelation, both as a singer and a comedic actor. His comedic chops are just topnotch. Very talented guy. It was raining when I met him at stagedoor. Told him he should do Broadway more often and he said he plans to do more in the future. Thanks, Zach!
ethan hawke//macbeth//nov 2013
Winter is almost here and perhaps the most difficult to make some stagedoor moments with. Thankfully, the stagedoor at Vivian Beaumont Theatre, currently housing Macbeth — the second version on Broadway this year (Alan Cumming did one earlier this year), is indoor so it’s not particularly cold.
I saw Brian D’Arcy James, Jonny Orsini passed by. I already had pics with them so I didn’t bother. I was eyeing on Daniel Sunjata and of course, Ethan Hawke. The only two girls who waited with me left when the lead actress, Ann-Marie Duff, came out. So basically, I was by my lonesome. Then Mr. Hawke came out with a woman-friend who came to see the show. They bid their goodbyes, he thanked her for coming. Then he approached the sidewalk for a cab. There was a group in front of me waiting for a cab so I initially thought he was with them. When it was clear that he wasn’t, I interrupted his cab-hailing and asked to sign my Playbill. I dropped the Sharpie a couple of times and I was mumbling about how I owned his book, Ash Wednesday, a gift from a friend. I then asked for a pic and the rest is history.
norbert leo butz//big fish//sept 2013
I never really understood the acclaim for Norbert Leo Butz until this production. Sure, I’ve seen him in Catch Me If You Can and he’s won the Tony but somehow, I didn’t get it. But with Big Fish, he plays Edward Bloom so masterfully and I instantly know why. He’s brilliant in every way. You should see his version of twerking in the opening number (thank you Susan Stroman). I told him “You, sir, are amazing. Third Tony in the making!”
bobby steggert//big fish//sept 2013
I was in shock and really unprepared when Bobby Steggert came out of the stage door that I said “OMG! I love you since Yank, man!” I wouldn’t have said that. I was a little embarrassed but then I segued into “I can’t wait for soundtrack!” Another facepalm moment. I meant, of course, cast recording. Bobby said “Yes, in a few months.” Then we took this face-front camera pic and he made sure that we got it. He was amazing in this show, btw. He has this ballad with major belting at the end. Sold!
adam perry//nice work//june 2013
OK, so I have a long time crush on Adam Perry since having seen him on Anything Goes. He’s such a great dancer. And then when he did Nice Work, I told myself that I’ll see it at some point. But then the show closed and I never got the chance until the night of the Tony Awards. While at Industry bar, we saw him and his friends just dancing and having a good time. With a little help from my friend Bobby, I asked him if we could take a photo and voila! He was very nice about it. I didn’t disturb his tearing up of the dance floor though. I waited until the right moment. I think he’s out in Cali doing a show somewhere. Hope he comes back to Broadway soon.
max von essen//evita//march 2012
This wasn’t taken at Evita. I saw Max waiting at stagedoor to meet his actor friends after Cinderella and I said hi since I didn’t get a chance to meet him when he was doing Evita. The night I watched was his first night back after being sick so very understandable that he didn’t come out. So I asked him for a retroactive photo-op for that Evita moment and he gladly obliged.
reeve carney//spider-man: turn off the dark// feb 2011
I heard Reeve Carney was leaving the show this September so I figured I’ll trek down there and see what the stagedoor situation is like, because again, I have nothing better to do. I saw the original Taymor version and was planning on seeing the new and improved production but I didn’t have enough drive to see it once more. So I came in with the original Playbill (Taymor version) and Reeve says “wow, this is crazy!” I felt that a lot has happened since this Playbill came out. It’s not even that show anymore. Anyway, got my photo-op and that’s all that matters. And I downloaded Rise Above 2 and was listening to it the whole time I was waiting. Felt apropos. I would have loved if TV Carpio and Jenn Damiano were still there.
billy porter//kinky boots//april 2013
Billy Porter, this year’s Tony Awards Best Actor, is such a nice guy and an incredible performer. I told him that I was just listening to Bui Doi and was imagining it in his voice. He said “that was a looong time ago.”
annaleigh ashford//kinky boots//april 2013
Been a big fan of Annaleigh Ashford since I saw her steal some scenes in Legally Blonde. I didn’t meet her during Hair and I missed Dogfight (I know! I hope they bring it back!) and her turn as Maureen in the off-Broadway Rent revival. But I do love her recurring cameos in Submissions Only. So I was really thrilled to see her again in Kinky Boots and boy, she’s such a scene-stealer. She’s supersweet and much like her character in SO. Unfortunately, you, guys, she won’t be back for Season 3.
